Julian Brown was born in Swansea. He took an interest in art at an early age and was taught drawing and perspective by his grandfather Seymour Brown who taught art part-time at the Swansea School of Art.
He went to Swansea Grammar School and from there to Swansea School of Art where he studied painting. After completing this course he endorsed his diploma with a years study in the b renowned stained glass department, finally taking his teaching diploma in 1955-56. In 1962 he was appointed to Carmarthen School of Art, now Dyfed College of Art.
During his twenty four years of lecturing Art, he introduced graphics, photography and wildlife illustration to the curriculum before retiring as Principal Lecturer in 1986. Julian took early retirement to pursue a full-time career in painting and to follow his other interests- industrial archaeology, engineering, bird watching and mountain walking. His subject matter is diverse, ranging from architecture, through machinery, to marine objects and landscape. Julian Brown is influenced by artists such as Picasso, Ceri Richards, Sickert, Morland Lewis and the watercolours of John Singer Sargent. He also admires the painters of the Newlyn School. Among contemporary watercolourists, he admires the work of Trevor Chamberlain and Rowland Hilder.
